What to do if all my accounts are gone each time I restart Chrome ?

We've had some reports of this issue.

So far, it looks like the Chrome extension synchronization might not work too well with extension data.
If you are using Chrome on more than one computer, and are having the issue on one of your computers with accounts disappearing from Yoono at each relaunch, you can try disabling the extension synchronization from the Options panel of Chrome.

What to do if my Yoono columns are reset every day ?

We've had a few users reporting that they needed to set up their Yoono columns every time they launched the application.

This can be due to not exiting Yoono Desktop properly before shutting down the system:
The X button does not exit the application, it only minimizes it.
You need to use the Exit menu item from the menu of Yoono Desktop.

If you do that, and still don't get your columns like they were last time, it can be due to a database corruption in Firefox or Yoono Desktop.

Here is what to do:

1 - Locate your current profile

If you are using Firefox, type about:support in the address bar, click on the second button of the page to open a file explorer

If you are using Yoono Desktop, open a file explorer (finder on Mac), and go to directory
Windows Vista/7 : C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Yoono\Yoono\Profiles\XXXXXXXX.default
Mac : /Users//Library/Application Support/Yoono/Profile/XXXXXXX.default

2 - Close Firefox or Yoono Desktop

3 - in File Explorer or Finder, go to subdirectory 'yoono'

4 - Find the file named anonUser.sqlite or .sqlite and replace its .sqlite extension with .bak

5 - Restart Firefox or Yoono Desktop.

How to install a dictionary for Yoono Desktop

If you are using Yoono Desktop, the only dictionary available for spell checking is the one by default : English US.

Installing a new dictionary can be done. It's not very user friendly, but it can be done !

Here's how...
Yoono Desktop should be closed first.

1 - download the dictionary you need : list is :
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/language-tools/

2 - For instance, lets assume you want to download the Spanish dictionary.
Go to its install page :
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3554/

Right click on the "Add to Firefox" button, and choose the "Save link as" option.

3 - Open the .xpi file you just downloaded with an unzipper (winzip, alzip...)
Under windows you may replace .xpi with .zip and you'll then be able to see it as a compressed folder.

4 - Inside it, go to subdirectory 'dictionaries', and extract the files with extensions .dic and .aff
In our example : es-ES.aff and es-ES.dic

5 - Put these files in the "Yoono Desktop/xulrunner/dictionaries" directory of the Yoono Desktop application directory. It already contains en-US.aff and en-US.dic

6 - Restart Yoono Desktop: when a word is underline because misspelled, a right click will show

Yoono : connect to an e-jabber server

Did you know that you can use Yoono as an jabber client to chat ?
The requirement is that the jabber server must be accessible from the internet (won't work on a local-only jabber server, sorry).
All you have to do is add the GTalk service in Yoono, and, instead of giving your google credential, give your jabber login (email) and password.

That's it !

Replying a tweet has never been easier

One very basic feature in tweeter is replying a tweet.
In Yoono, each tweet has a reply link that opens an input field, ready to get your reply, with character count and... spell-checking!

Embeded in the input field is also the green 'share' button that allows you to share elements of the page you are viewing in your browser, or the shortened url of that page...

Twitter hacked by so called "Iranian cyber army"

This evening (PST) or morning (UTC), Twitter was hacked by a so called Iranian Cyber Army.
Twitter's home page now displays a message from this organization, and Twitter API no longer works.
Please Yoono users, do not suspect Yoono from not working, it's actually Twitter that is not working.

Chances are the hack involves DNS tampering, let's hope they don't get all the authentication information to further damage things at Twitter.

If anyone knows about an API for the "Iranian Cyber Army" social network, just let us know.

One-click Retweet

Okay, we know that the 'new' retweet format introduced by Twitter in October is very controversial, but we felt we had to use it so that when people finally get used to it they'll feel at ease using it in Yoono.

It's been discussed if the old retweet feature allowing to edit tweets before sending them should be discontinued or not... But choices have to be made.

Anyway, here is a short (as always) video showing how easy and quick retweeting from Yoono is !

Hide a friend's updates temporarily or forever...

I guess all of us have 'friends', or just people we follow, that we sometimes find too productive and would like not to see for a while, but without removing them from our friends or unfollowing them.

Yoono has filters that allow you to do that!

To unhide a friend, open the Options panel on the network's tab, and you'll see the list of hidden friends, that you can show again.

Yoono in Beta Channel on Mozilla Add-ons

Mozilla Add-ons (https://addons.mozilla.org) recently released a "Beta Channel".
That's an easy way for add-ons fan to keep up with their favorite add-ons and be sure they get the very latest releases when they are available, automatically.
Of course, these releases are classified "Beta" which means they might not be as stable as the ones from the normal channel, so only advanced users, who do not mind that there is a (slight) chance they might have to uninstall / re-install from times to times...

How to tweet a shortened URL with Yoono ?

Often when you find a cool page that you want to tweet about, copying the page URL is both tedious and uneffective since it's usually big and eats up most of your 140 character allowance...

The solution is to shorten it, using a short URL service like bit.ly for instance.

This is where Yoono will help you (again). While the page is displayed, click twice on the green share icon of your tweet input field. The short bit.ly short URL will be appended!

Beware, if you selected stuff in the page before you clicked on the share button, a yoono.com share page will be created with what you selected, and its URL will be inserted instead.
That's a very convenient way of sharing specific elements (images, videos, texts) from a page, and it's described right here

Hidden features in Yoono Firefox Add-on

There are a few hidden features in the Firefox Add-on version of Yoono.

Some of them are hidden because they are not working well enough.

And some others because we never took the time of telling people about them :) I even believe some people at Yoono don't suspect they exist, but then I may be wrong.

Here are two of these hidden features (and they work well!)

You can minimize the Yoono toolbar just hitting CTRL-ALT-T on Windows, and CMD-ALT-T on Mac
Hit it again to restore its width.

And you can hit CTRL_ALT-Y (CMD-ALT-Y on Mac) to close Yoono, and open it again.
When Yoono is closed, you won't get updates, alerts, instant messages, ...

I've been told by our Artistic Director that a blog post should always display an image or a video so that it looks prettier, make people happy and read, and since I have no video to illustrate this tip, I thought I would just share with you a picture I took in Tokyo.

One of my favorite features in Yoono compared to many other twitter clients and twitter itself is the ability to get a thumbnail of pictures posted through yfrog, twitpic, mobypicture, pikchur...

Then, just hovering the thumbnail, get a full size view on top of your current page without leaving it...

Yesterday I spent some time reading the comments people left when they uninstalled. Quite a few people found some text too small in the yoono sidebar. So quick as a flash I added the functionality and the version will be released tomorrow ! How's that for reaction ?

You can now choose to have your sidebar in any of the following exciting sizes :

If people uninstall yoono (yes this does happen in extreme circumstances), they can leave a comment to say why they uninstalled.

I thought I'd let you know some of the reasons they give and try to give a response :

not linked to Linkedin > yoono 7 now includes LinkedIn
can't hide the thin bar on the left without signing out > yes you can - click on the yoono button in the Firefox toolbar
font is too small / typeface too small > with yoono 7.0.5 you can now change the font size
couldn't log out! / don´t know how too turn it off, when I want > click the menu button then "sign out". This closes all connections to your social networks and stops updates
exposure of private content over the net / don't like giving 3rd parties access to my stuff > in fact unlike a lot of social aggregators, we don't keep any passwords on the computer. See this post.
not possible to add social networks after installing > click on the menu button then Add Social Network, or right-click on the header where the account icons are
the annoying 'uh-oh' sound > yes I agree it's annoying. Yoono 7 now has a much nicer default sound, also you can have a different sound for each network (Twitter / Facebook etc.)
hated the profile changer right next to the address bar / cannot remove profile selector > the profile selector is new for yoono 7 - we're looking to making it easier to understand and adding the option to remove it
no obvious way to move it to the right side of my browser / would have liked a right side view > I don't know any firefox sidebars that can do this. Having said that, it's technically possible but we've just not got round to it ...
it finally disappreared from the window, I couldnt get the sidebar back in any way > click on the yoono button in the Firefox toolbar to display / undisplay
I'm waiting for Yoono Desktop for Linux > it's quite a pain to make a version for linux - there are lots of different install packages to have to create, but we're going to do it "soon" (where have you heard that before ...)

Now that's something I haven't seen in any other Twitter client so far : the Twitter conversation.
You know, when you reply to a tweet, and you get a reply to your reply, and so on...
It's not that uncommon!
Well, look at how Yoono can improve your usage of Twitter with conversations:

Yoono 7 introduces multi-account support

You know, this is just spam! Ads! Most of them, you don't care about. As for the other, it might be interesting the first time, and then it's plain boring!

Yoono is made of widgets, actually. While only the "Friends" and "Discover" are installed by default, other widgets are available, and one that is great is the "Email" widget.
It will give you access to Gmail, LiveMail and YahooMail.
Not only to read your emails, but to write, reply, etc...
It will also warn you when you get new messages.

Social networks clients: should you trust them with your passwords ?

I don't like it much when a third party web site or application requires my authentication information to, say, post a tweet in my name, or upload a picture...
Not that I doubt they can be trusted, but you never know what may happen.
Besides, in some cases, there are ways around this!

Yoono 7 does not ask for your passwords! Instead it uses authentication services provided by Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, where you authenticate on their websites! Yoono never knows what your passwords are.

For netbook users, Seesmic, Tweetdeck, and most AIR based social network clients are not for you.

AIR-based application take up large amounts of CPU (and you need to run other applications too - like a browser for instance!)
the column-based display just doesn't fit on the screen !

Yoono uses tabs - you can add as many Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace accounts, they will all fit!
Yoono 7 has been much improved on performances issues, while offering staggering features such as full text search in your last 25000 updates (if you have that many!)

But Yoono User Interface also has tricks that allows to custom fit it to your screen, by hiding non essential, or temporarily unused sections.

We have noticed many people complaining or apologizing to their friends in tweets that they had missed a Direct Message or a Reply, either on their Twitter home page, or using some Twitter clients.

Yoono has a very simple way to deal with that : tabs, and unread count indicators.
When the sidebar is fully displayed, the count indicators are displayed on each network icon, then on each update type tab.
It means that you get a counter for Twitter, but more than that, you get counters for Tweets, Direct Messages, Mentions, Searches...
These counters won't go away until you display each new message you got! Or you force them to reset using the "Mark all as read" option.
When the sidebar is reduced, an unread indicator sums up all the unread messages across all networks.

Apart from that, you also get alerts on the bottom right corner of your screen, that you can customize/disable on a per-network basis, as well as a warning sound you can chose from a small but nice selection (or disable altogether).
